About Katy Askew Gillott:
As a person-centred psychotherapist and counsellor, I offer a secure, welcoming and confidential space in which you can be understood and valued, and where you can begin to find your own way towards how you want to be. I will help you to reflect upon and explore your challenges whilst offering an independent, non-judgemental perspective.
I work in a person-centred way with a broad range of experiences including bereavement, relationship issues, anger management, depression, anxiety, addiction(s), eating disorders, abuse, low self-esteem, stress and low self-confidence.
About me
I am a person-centred psychotherapist and counsellor working in Manchester city centre. I trained at The Sherwood Institute in Nottingham (www.spti.net) and am now in the advanced stages of a Masters degree in Humanistic Person-Centred Psychotherapy having already attained Diploma level.
I have a particular interest in the experience of ‘endings’, which may occur due to bereavement, unemployment, the ending of relationships and general life transitions. I welcome supporting clients through these processes.
I have experience working with adults in a variety of settings and have extensive experience of working with adult carers and women experiencing distress and challenge. In addition to private practice, I currently work as a counsellor and psychotherapist at the Stockport Women's Centre. My prior employment has included work with homeless and vulnerable adults.
I am an Associate member of the BACP (www.bacp.co.uk) and as such adhere to their code of ethics for practice, alongside those of the UKCP (www.psychotherapy.org.uk)
About Therapy
During our initial meeting we will take the opportunity to discover if we are able to work together as therapist and client. You may decide to continue meeting or you may decide otherwise. Should I feel that I am not able to help you, we will discuss this during our meeting and we will look at the available alternatives. Our work together may last a number of weeks or be much more long term. This will depend on the nature of your challenges but always involves mutual discussion.
Each of our meetings will last 50 minutes. For each 50-minute meeting I will charge £39.00, payable during our session. I will offer the initial consultation free of charge.
What is Person-Centred Psychotherapy and Counselling?
Person-centred therapy asks that a therapist works with their client whilst bearing in mind three 'core conditions':
- Unconditional Positive Regard: The client is warmly valued simply for who they are and where they find themselves to be.
- Empathy: The therapist aims to understand and experience the client's world as the client himself or herself experiences it.
- Congruence: The therapist is present in the relationship in a transparent way, providing a real and truthful account of the experience of being with the client.
When these conditions are in place, the client will find himself or herself better able to draw upon their natural ability to change and grow.
