About Lucy Ascham:
Lucy graduated from Fellside, Cumbria Alexander Training in Kendal in 2003 having been introduced to the Alexander Technique in 1989 when studying for a music degree. The Technique helped initially with stage fright as a musician and contributed to staying healthy through 10 years in orchestral management.
She has a post-graduate qualification in “Eutokia” - Alexander Technique for Pregnancy and Childbirth having studied with Ilana Machover. Lucy offers antenatal sessions for pregnant women in Alexander work to build confidence in looking after themselves during pregnancy and skills preparing for childbirth. There are many specific and general benefits to improving posture: back care, breathing, comfort and efficiency in movement as well as promoting optimal foetal position and ease in childbirth.
Lucy has a private practice here at Bodywise (on Fridays) and in her home Studio in Whalley Range (Mondays and Wednesdays).
People come to learn how to work on alleviating specific health issues – headaches, sore backs, and pain in the shoulder area, fallen arches and general stress related issues. Some improve skills: as musicians, dancers, martial arts and for running, others use the Technique to recover from injuries and operations without gathering habits of compensation. Many people find the Technique enhances confidence in presentation skills, breathing becomes easier, they feel calmer and more in control of themselves. The Technique is simple and far reaching and can help you find freer, easier and more elegant movement to prevent future problems and enhance well-being.
Lucy offers group and individual lessons to staff and musicians at the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester.
Weekly group classes are held at lunchtimes at Manchester University Wellbeing Room introducing the Alexander Technique for stress-relief, back care and self-help to lecturers, staff, students and the public.
Introductory workshops at Bodywise take place several times a year and Lucy works with Mahabodhi, meditation teacher offering joint sessions in Alexander Technique and Meditation here at Manchester Buddhist Centre.
After wearing glasses since she was 18 months old, Lucy has discharged her need for glasses and has naturally improved her vision using the Eyebody work of Peter Grunwald – a unique area of the Alexander Technique and an area of continued personal discovery and growth.
Lucy is also very interested in Nonviolent Communication which has taken her to India during December 2006 for a 10 day International Intensive Training course. This works very congruently with Alexander Technique and meets needs for learning, fun and harmony.
